History

Clay Space 1205 is located in what was originally a 19th century manufacturing complex with the East River to the west and Newtown Creek to the north west, this prominent 300,000 square  foot industrial space evolved over time into what is now home for small manufacturers and artisans.   When Clay Space 1205 founder, Janine Sopp, was introduced to this exquisite brick building with its loft-like qualities, she caught a glimpse of what the future of Greenpoint would hold for a communal ceramic center.

In 1993, when this historic neighborhood was already brimming with artists, crafts people and designers, Janine moved her start up ceramic business to a 3,000 square foot loft space.  While spending that first decade developing her own business, renovating the space and collecting equipment, she prepared the way for a small community of ceramic artists and designers to join in this venture.  Since then, it has grown into a community of more than twenty members whose collective styles and knowledge is vast and wide.

Gallery 1205 features member’s work throughout the year while it looks to celebrate outside artists in and around the community. The objective is to serve and inspire the community through classes, services and exhibitions and to promote the boundless attributes of clay.  Those interested in receiving updates on shows and exhibit opportunities should sign the mailing list or check this site on a regular basis.
